As a company that employs a number of drivers it’s important that we support them and stay up to date with any changes in legislation that may affect them. It’s been illegal to use a hand-held mobile phone while driving, or while the engine is on, since December 2003, however the government is cracking down further, and penalties have just become a lot harsher. From 1 March 2017, the Fixed Penalty Notice for using a hand-held mobile phone while driving was increased to £200 and six points. This means new drivers who get caught using their phone at the wheel could risk losing their licence entirely. That’s because any driver issued with six points within two years of passing their test is automatically disqualified. The same rules apply to all electronic devices which can be connected to the internet – including iPods, tablets, and some digital cameras. If you want to use a device, look for a suitable place to stop, and make sure your engine is switched off. You need to make sure that you have the appropriate headset if you need to answer calls on the go, as simply touching your screen can result in a penalty. These laws are there for the protection of everyone and keep the roads safe, so make sure your teams are kept up to date.
