Period poverty is becoming a hot topic in the UK as tens of thousands of women in London alone struggle to afford menstrual products every month.
North Ayrshire Council are beginning to offer free sanitary products via vending machine in over 100 buildings as they claim that “the time is right” to end period poverty. The council were the one of the first to introduce free products in secondary schools- allowing young women to benefit from over 13,000 free sanitary towels and tampons since being initiated.
With the awareness that “periods are not exempt from poverty [and that]- they don’t consider what is in your pocket or purse,” London Mayor Sadiq Khan announces that he’ll be joining forces with The Red Box Project which supplies sanitary products to local schools.
As the campaign has been won in the capital city, will women see the end of period poverty?
